In this article we are going to add some details to squid in order to allow it to filter based on MAC address and block certain clients from having full access. Alternatively you could reverse the rule and only allow the listed clients to have full access.

Squid 2.5 Stable 10 Mac OS X.dmg (1.29 Meg) This download page kept as a community resource. For details regarding the Squid project please go to: www.squid-cache.orgwww. A squid proxy cache acts as an intermediary between the viewer and Linden Lab. It fetches the data requested by the viewer and stores it; should it be requested again, it provides the copy it has already downloaded almost instantly.

First we are going to assume that you have a working Squid setup if not then there are other articles that will tell you how to get that going, on Redhat or CentOS it is as simple as:

You are going to want to make the following file in /etc/squid/

In the above file put the MAC addresses of the clients that you want to filter access. Once you have it should look something like:

Squid Savings Mac OS

Headcase mac os. Now create another file which will be the list of sites that we do not want these clients to be able to access.

For this example we don't want our office staff to be accessing facebook or youtube so the file would look like this:

Now the only things left to do are tell squid conf about these files and then reload or restart squid.

Add the following lines under the other acls

Now do a restart or reload and test it out, you will find that the clients mentioned in /etc/squid/client_macs cannot get to the sites listed in /etc/squid/blocked_sites, exactly as we wanted

Time Control

You might want to control the time of day that certain clients will be filtered using this method. Micro machines racing on line mac os. A good solution for this has been written up in the below link.Or you can use the Squid builtin time restrictions. Both are discussed below.

Squid's built-in method:

Alternatively you could use Cron and Template file this is the quick and dirty way to do this, I might write a script in a later post to do this better.

First we need to make a directory for our templates

Now to create our templates

In the day template we are going to want our list of MAC addresses as that is when people will be in the office. In our night template it is going to be an empty file because that is when I.T. will be doing maintenance etc, squid will complain about the empty file but ultimately it does not care.

Now we just need to make our entries in Cron.

We want our day time filter to kick in at 8:30am and our night time filter to kick in at 6:00pm

1. Since when do you work with Squid ?
SM : I started to use Squid during the previous Volvo Ocean Race in 2014, particularly in the preparation of each step of the race.

2. What is your use of Squid ?
SM : It depends on the situation in which I find myself. Offshore, I'm generally not responsible for navigation. However, I use the software to view the upcoming weather before taking my shift (as ALVIMEDICA). This allows me to anticipate weather changes during my shift.

3. How often do you use Squid?
SM : Almost daily.

4. For what purpose and in what context?
SM : Offshore, I use it to prepare my shift. On land, I sometimes use Squid when I want to follow the races where I am not participating. I can also use it to help friends prepare for their races (like I did during the last Mini Fastnet), or for my personal pleasure.

5. When you talk about personal hobbies, what do you mean?
SM : (Laughter) When I want to do moth, kite surfing or even surfing.. This allows me to aim for the best weather window and optimize my leisure time according to the analysis I draw from the weather files.

6. So even when you're onshore you are using Squid?
SM : Absolutely, my skipper job is a passion. I'm following almost all the sailing related news. I often make my own weather analysis, according to the current sailing news. For example, I use Squid to find the best weather window for a record break or analyze a difficult situation of a specific race, etc.

7. When you talk about the record attempt you followed, you are talking about Best-Start?
SM : Absolutely, I recently followed the record attempt of François Gabart. Best-Start has enabled me to understand the issues and decisions that were made by his team in real time.

8. A final word on Squid?
SM : What I find really nice is that Squid centralizes all the data needed. We don't need to browse many places to get different data sources. Off shore, we are sure that with this software we will have access to everything we need. Squid benefits from an exceptional concentration data, which is amazing. The time savings offered by Squid is exactly what you need during navigation.
